On this day in Dutch history
On the 18th of Otober 1967, Queen Juliana opened pumping station De Blocq van Kuffeler.
This is one of the pumping stations that keeps Flevoland, the 12th province of the Netherlands, dry. This particular station is the biggest of its kind in the world, and keeps the southern part of Flevoland dry. This polder was the last to have its water removed.
The station is named after engineer Victor de Blocq van Kuffeler. His life’s work were the Zuiderzee Works, the name of the project that closed off the Zuiderzee from the North Sea with the Afsluitdijk. The Zuiderzee was renamed the IJsselmeer. This move was pivotal in creating Flevoland.
The polder this pumping station is responsible for was dry on the 29th of May 1968.
The Zuiderzee Works were one of the most ambitious set of watermanagement projects ever carried out.
